Biography

I am Professor of Verification and Control (formerly, Associate Professor) in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Oxford, Fellow and Tutor at St Hugh’s College Oxford, and Faculty Fellow at the Alan Turing Institute in London.

Born in Milan in 1978, I grew up in Padua and received a Laurea degree in Electrical Engineering (summa cum laude) in October 2002 from the University of Padua. As an undergraduate, I also studied at UC Berkeley and RWTH Aachen.

I earned an MS in May 2004 and a PhD in December 2007, both in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, at UC Berkeley, working on Systems and Control Theory with S. Sastry. Meanwhile, I was an International Fellow in the CS Lab at SRI International in Menlo Park (CA). Thereafter, I was a PostDoctoral Researcher at Stanford University, in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, working with C. Tomlin on Systems Biology in affiliation with the Stanford School of Medicine.

From June 2009 to mid-2013 I have been an Assistant Professor at the Delft Center for Systems and Control, TU Delft - Delft University of Technology, working with my research group on Verification and Control of complex systems.

My research interests lie in the analysis, formal verification, and control theory of heterogeneous and complex dynamical models – in particular of stochastic hybrid systems – and in their applications in cyber-physical systems (particularly involving safety-critical applications, energy, and biological networks).

Biography

Konstantinos Ampountolas received the Diploma in Production Engineering and Management (1999), the M.Sc. degree in Operations Research (2002), and the Ph.D. degree in Engineering (2009), all from the Technical University of Crete, Chania, Greece.

Since 2019, he has been an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Thessaly (UTH), Volos, Greece. Before to joining UTH, he was initially a Lecturer and then a Senior Lecturer with the James Watt School of Engineering at the University of Glasgow (UofG, 2013-2019), United Kingdom, and an Associate Director at UofG’s Urban Big Data Centre (2019). He was research fellow at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL, 2012-2013), Switzerland, visiting researcher scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, CA (2011), and post-doctoral researcher at the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas, Greece (2010). He was also a short-term visiting professor at Technion–Israel Institute of Technology, Israel (2014), Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden (2016), and the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Florianópolis, Brazil (2016; 2019).

Dr Ampountolas serves as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Big Data Analytics in Transportation (since 2018), and on the Editorial Advisory Boards of Transportation Research Part C (since 2013), and Transportation Research Procedia (since 2014). He also served as the Editor for Transportation of Data in Brief (2018–2019).

Biography

Dr. Anuradha Annaswamy received her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Yale University in 1985. She has been a member of the faculty at Yale, Boston University, and MIT where currently she is the director of the Active-Adaptive Control Laboratory and a Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Her research interests pertain to adaptive control theory and applications to aerospace, automotive, and propulsion systems, cyber-physical systems science, and CPS applications to Smart Grids, Smart Cities, and Smart Infrastructures. She is the author of a hundred journal publications and numerous conference publications, co-author of a graduate textbook on adaptive control (2004), co-editor of several reports including “Systems & Control for the future of humanity, research agenda: Current and future roles, impact and grand challenges,” (Elsevier) “IEEE Vision for Smart Grid Control: 2030 and Beyond,” (IEEE Xplore) and Impact of Control Technology, (ieeecss.org/main/IoCT-report, ieeecss.org/general/IoCT2-report).

Dr. Annaswamy has received several awards including the George Axelby and Control Systems Magazine best paper awards from the IEEE Control Systems Society (CSS), the Presidential Young Investigator award from NSF, the Hans Fisher Senior Fellowship from the Institute for Advanced Study at the Technische Universität München, the Donald Groen Julius Prize from the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, a Distinguished Member Award, and a Distinguished Lecturer Award from IEEE CSS. Dr. Annaswamy is a Fellow of the IEEE and IFAC. She has served as the Vice President for Conference Activities (2014-15) and is currently serving as the VP for Technical Activities (2017-18) in the Executive Committee of the IEEE CSS.

Biography

Professor Barth received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering/Computer Science from the University of Colorado in 1984, and M.S. (1985) and Ph.D. (1990) degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Professor Barth was also a member of the technical staff in the Advanced Technologies Division of General Research Corporation, Santa Barbara from 1985 to 1986. From 1986 to 1987 he conducted research at the University of Tokyo as a visiting research student. Upon completion of his Ph.D., Professor Barth was a visiting researcher at Osaka University, Japan, conducting research in systems engineering from 1989 to 1991. Dr. Barth joined the University of California-Riverside in 1991, conducting research in Electrical Engineering and at the Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CE-CERT), where he is currently Director and the Yeager Families Chair. Professor Barth’s research focuses on applying engineering system concepts and automation technology to Transportation Systems, and in particular how it relates to energy and air quality issues. His current research interests include Intelligent Transportation Systems, Vehicle Activity Analysis, Transportation/ Emissions Modeling, Electric Vehicle Technology, and Advanced Sensing and Control. Professor Barth is active in the U.S. Transportation Research Board currently serving on the Transportation and Air Quality Committee and the Intelligent Transportation Systems Committee. He was awarded the TRB Pyke Johnson Award for TRB outstanding paper in 2007. In 2011, he was one of the winners of the Connected Vehicle Technology Challenge sponsored by U.S. Department of Transportation’s Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA). He has also served on a number of National Research Council (NRC) committees. Professor Barth has also been very active within IEEE Intelligent Transportation System Society for many years, participating in their conferences as a presenter, invited session organizer, session moderator, program chair, associate editor of the Transactions of ITS, and member of the IEEE ITSS Board of Governors. He was the IEEE ITSS Vice President for Conferences from 2011-2012, President-Elect for 2013, President for 2014-2015, and Past-President for 2016. He recently received the IEEE ITSS Outstanding Research Award.

René K. Boel received a degree in electromechanical engineering (1969) and in nuclear engineering (1970) from Ghent University, an M.Sc. (1972), and a Ph.D. degree (1974) in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley, U.S.A.

He is currently a professor at the SYSTeMS Research group, School of Engineering, Ghent University, Ghent (Belgium). He was a research fellow of the F.W.O.-Vlaanderen (Flemish Foundation for Scientific research) until September 2000.

He has held temporary appointments at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences-University of California Berkeley, the department of Technical Cybernetics NTH-Trondheim Norway, the Mathematics department of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, the Mathematics and Statistics department of Bell laboratories Murray Hill (N.J.), the Department of Computing and Control of Imperial College London, the Department of Systems Engineering, Australian National University, Canberra, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Newcastle, Australia, and the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department, Melbourne University.

He has been an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, Automatica, Journal of Applied Stochastic Models in Business and Industry, and is currently Department Editor for the Journal on Discrete Event Dynamic Systems, Associate Editor for IET Control Theory and Applications, and member of the editorial board of Systems and Control Letters. He was chairman of the Steering Committee for the Workshop on Discrete Event Systems (2000-2002 and 2006-2008), and he has been on the organising committee for a large number of conferences in control, statistics, and communication networks.

His current research interests are in the field of distributed control and estimation for stochastic, discrete event and hybrid systems, with applications to traffic networks and power systems, as well as in bioinformatics.

Christos G. Cassandras is Distinguished Professor of Engineering at Boston University, Head of the Division of Systems Engineering, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and co-founder of the Center for Information and Systems Engineering. He received degrees from Yale University, Stanford University, and Harvard University. In 1982-84 he was with ITP Boston, Inc. and in 1984-1996 he was with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Massachusetts/Amherst. He specializes in the areas of discrete event and hybrid systems, cooperative control, stochastic optimization, and computer simulation, with applications to computer and sensor networks, manufacturing systems, and transportation systems. He has published over 350 refereed papers in these areas, and five books. He has collaborated with The MathWorks, Inc. in the development of the discrete event and hybrid system simulator SimEvents. Dr. Cassandras was Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control (1998-2009) and the 2012 President of the IEEE Control Systems Society. He is the recipient of several awards, including the 2011 IEEE Control Systems Technology Award, the Distinguished Member Award of the IEEE Control Systems Society (2006), IFAC’s 1999 Harold Chestnut Prize, 2011 and 2014 prizes for the IBM/IEEE Smarter Planet Challenge competition, the 2014 Engineering Distinguished Scholar Award at Boston University, several honorary professorships, a 1991 Lilly Fellowship and a 2012 Kern Fellowship. He is also a Fellow of the IEEE and a Fellow of the IFAC.

Mariagrazia Dotoli is a Full Professor in Systems and Control Engineering at Politecnico di Bari, Department of Electrical and Information Engineering, which she joined in 1999 as a tenured Assistant Professor. She was the 2011-2013 Vice-Rector for Research of Politecnico di Bari (Italy) and a 2012-2015 member-elect of the Academic Senate of the same University. She is currently Vice Director for Research of the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering at Politecnico di Bari. She received the Laurea degree in Electronic Engineering with honors in 1995 and the Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 1999, both from Politecnico di Bari.

She has been a visiting scholar at the Paris 6 University (France) and at the Technical University of Denmark. Since 2003 she is an expert evaluator of the European Commission, previously for the Sixth and Seventh RTD Framework Programmes, and subsequently for Horizon 2020. Her research interests include the modeling, identification, management, control, automation, optimization, and diagnosis of: discrete event industrial systems, Petri nets, manufacturing systems, supply chains, logistics and transportation systems, traffic networks, energy systems.

She is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering, the IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, and the IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics: Systems. She was an Associate Editor of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters until 2018.

She is currently General Chair of the MED2021 29th Mediterranean Conference on Control and Automation, Program Chair of the CODIT2020 International Conference on Control, Decision and Information Technologies, Program Chair of the CASE2020 annual IEEE Conference on Automation Science and Engineering and Publicity Co-Chair of the IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics.

She was the Workshop and Tutorial chair of the 2015 IEEE Conference on Automation Science and Engineering, the Special Session co-chair of the 2013 IEEE Conference on Emerging Technology and Factory Automation, and chair of the National Committee of the 2009 IFAC Workshop on Dependable Control of Discrete Systems. She has been member of the International Program Committee of 70+ international Conferences and Symposia. She is a member of the following committees: IFAC Technical Committee on Discrete Event and Hybrid Systems (since 2011); IEEE Systems Man and Cybernetics Society Technical Committee on Discrete Event Systems (since 2007); IEEE Control Systems Society Technical Committee on Discrete Event Systems (since 2005).

Biography

Antonella Ferrara received the M.Sc. degree (Cum Laude and printing honors) in electronic engineering and the Ph.D. degree in computer science and electronics from the University of Genova, Italy, in 1987 and 1992, respectively. Since 2005, she has been Full Professor of automatic control at the University of Pavia, Italy, where she is the Head of the Intelligent Robotics Laboratory, as well as the President of the Research Standing Committee of the Department of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering. Her research activities are mainly in the area of nonlinear control, with a special emphasis on sliding mode control, with application to road traffic, automotive systems, robotics and power systems. She is author and co-author of more than 450 publications including more than 150 journal papers, 2 monographs and one edited book.

She was Visiting Professor at Graz University of Technology, visiting scholar at the University of Minnesota, as well as Invited Lecturer at Harvard University, University of California at Los Angeles, University of Stuttgart, Technical University of Delft, INRIA Grenoble, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Hanyang University in Seoul, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Dalian Maritime University, National Institute of Technology Silchar, IIIT Kharagpur, Murdoch University, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Nanjing University of Science and Technology, Imperial College, University of Cambridge, and University of Exeter, among others. She was/is Principal Investigator in several European, international and national projects and was one of the eleven experts appointed by the Italian Ministry of Research to write the National Research Plan for the period 2021-2027 for the research area “Sustainable Mobility”.

She was Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Control Systems, of the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, and of the IEEE Control Systems Magazine. She was Subject Editor of the International Journal of Robust and Nonlinear Control. She was Associate Editor and Senior Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Vehicles. Since 2018 she has been Associated Editor of Automatica, and, since January 2022, Senior Editor of IEEE Open Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems.

She served as a member of the EUCA Council and, since ECC 2019, she has been the EUCA Conference Editorial Board Chair. She will serve as one of the IPC Chairs (together with Maurice Heemels) for the 24th IFAC Word Congress to be held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, in 2029.

She was “appointed member” of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Control Systems Society in 2012. She was Chair of the Women in Control Committee of the IEEE Control Systems Society (July 2013-December 2016) and, at present, she is a member of the Advisory Board of that committee. She was “elected member” of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Control Systems Society for the triennium 2016-2018. She was member of the IEEE Control System Society Outreach Task Force (2017-2019) and was the Chair of the Task Force in 2020. She is incoming member of the ExCom of the IEEE Control System Society with the role of Director of Operations (2023-2026 term). In 2015-2019, she was a Member of the European Control Association (EUCA) Council.

She is a member of the IFAC Technical Committee (TC) on Nonlinear Control Systems, IFAC TC on Transportation Systems, IFAC TC on Intelligent Autonomous Vehicles, IEEE TC on Automotive Control, IEEE TC on Smart Cities, and IEEE TC on Variable Structure Systems. Among several awards, she was a co-recipient of the 2020 IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology Outstanding Paper Award. She is IEEE Fellow and IFAC Fellow.

Christoforos Hadjicostis received S.B. degrees in Electrical Engineering, in Computer Science and Engineering, and in Mathematics, the M.Eng. degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 1995, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 1999, all from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA. In August 1999 he joined the Faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) where he reached the rank of Associate Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Research Associate Professor with the Coordinated Science Laboratory, and Research Associate Professor with the Information Trust Institute. In 2007, Dr. Hadjicostis joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Cyprus, where he served as Chair of the ECE Department from 2008 to 2010, and as Dean of Engineering from 2014 to 2017. He currently serves as Interim Director of the FOSS Research Center for Sustainable Energy at the University of Cyprus.

Dr. Hadjicostis teaches and conducts research in the areas of systems and control, communication, and digital signal processing. His current research focuses on fault diagnosis and tolerance in distributed dynamic systems; error control coding; distributed algorithms for monitoring, diagnosis and control; discrete event systems; and applications to power distribution networks, network security, anomaly detection, medical diagnosis, and biosequencing. Dr. Hadjicostis serves as Editor in Chief for the Journal of Discrete Event Dynamic Systems and as Associate Editor for Automatica. He has also served as Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems I (Regular Papers), IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, the Journal of Nonlinear Analysis: Hybrid Systems, and the Journal of Discrete Event Dynamic Systems, and as Editor on the Conference Editorial Board of the IEEE Control Systems Society. At the University of Illinois, Dr. Hadjicostis received the Faculty Early Development (CAREER) award from the National Science Foundation in February 2001, the ECE Faculty Outstanding Teaching Award in 2003, and the Willett Faculty Scholar recognition from the College of Engineering in 2005; at the University of Cyprus, he received a 2008 Marie Curie International Reintegration Fellowship from the European Commission. As a graduate student at MIT, he served as president of the MIT Chapter of HKN, received the Harold L. Hazen Teaching Award and the Ernst A. Guillemin Thesis Prize, and received fellowships from the National Semiconductor Corporation and the Grass Instrument Company. Dr. Hadjicostis is a member of Eta Kappa Nu and Sigma Xi, and a Fellow of the IEEE.

Qing-Shan (Samuel) Jia (S’02–M’06–SM’11) received the B.E. degree in automation and the Ph.D. degree in control science and engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 2002 and 2006, respectively.

He is an Associate Professor with the Centre for Intelligent and Networked Systems, Department of Automation, Beijing National Research Center for Information Science and Technology, Tsinghua University. He was a Visiting Scholar with Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA, in 2006, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong, in 2010, and the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, USA, in 2013. His current research interests include integrated data-driven, statistical, and computational approaches to find designs and decision-making policies that have simple structures and guaranteed good performance. His research relies on strong collaborations with experts in manufacturing systems, energy systems, autonomous systems, and smart cities.

Dr. Jia is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control the IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering, and Discrete Event Dynamic Systems: Theory and Applications. He served as the Discrete Event Systems Technical Committee Chair of the IEEE Control Systems Society from 2012 to 2015 and currently serves as the Chair of the IFAC Technical Committee 9.3 on “Control for Smart Cities” and the Smart Buildings Technical Committee Co-Chair of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society and the Beijing Chapter Chair of the IEEE Control Systems Society.

Karanjit Kalsi is the Principal Engineer and Technical Team Lead (TTL) for the Optimization and Controls Group at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). Over the past 8 years, Dr. Kalsi has led the development of a unique capability at PNNL around the application of control theory to a rapidly changing, more complex, and more distributed energy system. He has made pioneering contributions in the area of distributed control for enhanced bulk power system stability and distribution system reliability, as well as market-based techniques for integration of buildings and distributed energy resources with the electric grid.

Currently, at PNNL, Dr. Kalsi has technical responsibility and management oversight for approximately $9 million annually in control-related projects that impact several DOE agencies, including the Building Technologies Office (BTO), Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability (OE) and Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). He also has a robust publication record of more than 50 papers in high-impact journals with more than 1,100 citations, earning an h-index of 21. He is also currently a visiting faculty member at the California Institute of Technology, where he partners with faculty on the topic of safety-critical controls for complex infrastructure systems. Dr. Kalsi received his Ph.D. from Purdue University in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2010 and his M.Eng in Electronic Engineering from the University of Sheffield in 2006.

Biography

Dr. Lian received the M.S. and Ph.D degrees in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN in 2007 and 2009, respectively. From 2010 to 2011, he worked as a postdoctoral research associate at Center for Advanced Power Systems, Tallahassee, FL, where he was involved in various projects related to the development of future all-electric warship supported by Office of Naval Research (ONR). Prior to joining ORNL, Dr. Lian was a Chief Engineer and Team Lead in Electricity Infrastructure & Building Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). He was also the Adjunct Professor at Washington State University Tri-Cities since 2014, where he taught the undergraduate and graduate courses on control.

Dr. Lian’s research interests focus on the diverse methods from control, optimization, economics, game theory, data analytics and machine learning to improve the reliability and resilience as well as security and sustainability of complex energy systems including power grid and building system. He is specialized in solving the problems with nonclassical challenges imposed by large-scale complex systems. He has served as the project manager, PI/Co-PI and key technical contributor of many large projects focusing on the engagement and integration of various distributed energy resources (DERs) into the future distribution management system. In particular, he has established the theoretical foundation of market-based control (aka. transactive control) for future transactive energy system. He has authored or co-authored 3 book chapters and over 80 technical publications in peer-reviewed journals and conferences, and delivered more than 15 invited talks. He also hold 8 U.S. patent applications (4 granted) and 3 Canadian patent applications.

Dr. Jiaqi Ma is an Associate Professor at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering and faculty lead in New Mobility at UCLA Institute of Transportation Studies. Prior to that, he was Assistant/Associate Professor and Academic Director of the University of Cincinnati Advanced Transportation Collaborative, Project Manager and Research Scientist with Leidos working at the Federal Highway Administration Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center, and a contractor researcher at the Virginia Transportation Research Council of the Virginia Department of Transportation (DOT). He has led and managed many research projects worth a total value of more than $15 million funded by U.S. DOT, NSF, state DOTs, and other federal/state/local programs covering areas of smart transportation systems, such as vehicle-highway automation, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), connected vehicles, shared mobility, and large-scale smart system modeling and simulation, and artificial intelligence and advanced computing applications in transportation. He is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Open Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems and Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems. Ahmed Ali A. Mohamed (El-Tallawy) is an Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering (EE) at the City College of the City University of New York (CUNY). He is the EE PhD Program Advisor and the director of the CUNY Smart Grid Interdependencies Laboratory (http://smartgrid.ccny.cuny.edu). Prof. Mohamed serves as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Transportation Electrification, IEEE Access, MDPI Energies, and a moderator for IEEE TechRxiv.

Prof. Mohamed received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Florida International University in 2013. His research work is supported through funds from various companies and national funding agencies, e.g. Con Edison, the National Science Foundation, and New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. His research interests include critical infrastructure interdependencies, smart grid resilience, microgrids, and transportation electrification. He has numerous publications in these fields as book chapters, and articles in premier journals and conference proceedings.
Prof. Mohamed is the recipient of the 2019 NSF CAREER Award, among several other honors and awards. Several of Prof. Mohamed’s papers received prestigious awards, such as the IEEE Electric Machinery Committee Best Paper Award.

Prof. Mohamed served on review panels for several national and international funding agencies, e.g. the US Department of Energy, the US National Science Foundation, and the Chilean National Science and Technology Commission. He is the Advisor of the CCNY chapters of IEEE PES/IAS/PELS and HKN. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and has held several IEEE executive positions.

George Papas earned his B.S. in 1991 and M.S. in 1992 in Computer and Systems Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute before coming to Berkeley. While a student at Berkeley, he also served as a graduate fellow in the Division of Applied Sciences at Harvard in 1994. He was the recipient of the Berkeley EECS Eli Jury Award for Excellence in Systems Research in 1999.

Pappas was hired as a professor of Electrical and Systems Engineering (ESE) at the University of Pennsylvania in 2000, with secondary appointments in the Departments of Computer and Information Sciences, and Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics. He served as the Deputy Dean for Research in the School of Engineering and Applied Science from 2008 to 2012, when he was named Chair of the ESE Department. He is a member and former director of the General Robotics, Automation, Sensing and Perception (GRASP) Lab and a member of the Penn Research In Embedded Computing and Integrated Systems Engineering (PRECISE) Center. His research focuses on control theory and in particular, hybrid systems, embedded systems, hierarchical and distributed control systems, with applications to unmanned aerial vehicles, distributed robotics, green buildings, and biomolecular networks.

Pappas won an NSF Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) in 2004 and became an IEEE Fellow in 2009. He has received numerous awards including the IEEE Control Systems George S. Axelby Outstanding Paper Award in 2009, the IEEE Control Systems Antonio Ruberti Young Researcher Prize in 2010, the American Control Conference O. Hugo Schuck Best Paper Award in both 2014 and 2016, the Penn George H. Heilmeier Faculty Award for Excellence in Research in 2015, the ICRA Best Paper Award in 2017, and the Penn Provost's Award for Distinguished PhD Teaching and Mentoring also in 2017. Pappas was named Fellow of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) in 2019 "for contributions to hybrid and networked control systems with applications to robotics."

Tariq Samad holds the Honeywell/W.R. Sweatt Chair at the Technological Leadership Institute at the University of Minnesota, where he also serves as the Director of Graduate Studies for the nation’s longest-running M.S. in Management of Technology program and has an adjunct faculty appointment in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Dr. Samad joined TLI in 2016 after a 30-year career with Honeywell, for the last half of which he was a Corporate Fellow with Honeywell Automation and Control Solutions (ACS). During his career with Honeywell, he contributed to and led automation and control technology developments for applications in electric power systems, clean energy, building management, the process industries, automotive engines, unmanned aircraft, and advanced manufacturing. His research interests relate broadly to automation, intelligence, and autonomy for complex engineering systems. In 2015-2016 he also served as the first Global Innovation Leader for the business.

Dr. Samad was the President of the American Automatic Control Council for 2014-15 and the President of the IEEE Control Systems Society in 2009. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and of IFAC and the recipient of a few awards including the 2008 IEEE CSS Control Systems Technology Award, a Distinguished Member Award from IEEE CSS, and an IEEE Third Millennium Medal. He is the former editor-in-chief of IEEE Press and has recently launched a new book series for Wiley/IEEE Press on “Technology Management, Innovation, and Leadership.” He is the founding chair of the new Industry Committee for IFAC. Dr. Samad holds 20 patents and has authored or edited over 100 publications. He is currently working on the second edition of the Encyclopedia of Systems and Control (co-editor-in-chief, Springer, 2014). He was a founding member of the Board of Directors of the U.S. Smart Grid Interoperability Panel and he co-led technology deep dives on advanced sensing, controls, and platforms for manufacturing as part of the U.S. Advanced Manufacturing Partnership initiative. Dr. Samad holds a B.S. degree in Engineering and Applied Science from Yale University and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.
