Biography

Alessandro Astolfi (F’09) was born in Rome, Italy, in 1967. He received the Graduate degree in electrical engineering from the University of Rome, Rome, in 1991, the M.Sc. degree in information theory and the Ph.D. degree with Medal of Honor with a thesis on discontinuous stabilization of nonholonomic systems from ETH-Zürich, Zürich, Switzerland, both in 1995 and the Ph.D. degree for his work on nonlinear robust control from the University of Rome La Sapienza, Rome, Italy, in 1996.,Since 1996, he has been with the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department, Imperial College London, London, U.K., where he is currently a Professor of nonlinear control theory and the Head of the Control and Power Group. From 1998 to 2003, he was also an Associate Professor with the Department of Electronics and Information, Politecnico of Milano. Since 2005, he has also been a Professor with Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile e Ingegneria Informatica, University of Rome Tor Vergata, Rome. He has been a Visiting Lecturer in nonlinear control with several universities, including ETH-Zurich (1995–1996); Terza University of Rome (1996); Rice University, Houston, TX, USA (1999); Kepler University, Linz, Austria (2000); SUPELEC, Paris, France (2001); and Northeastern University (2013). He is the author of more than 150 journal papers, 30 book chapters, and more than 240 papers in refereed conference proceedings. He is the author (with D. Karagiannis and R. Ortega) of the monograph Nonlinear and Adaptive Control With Applications (Springer-Verlag). His research interests include mathematical control theory and control applications, with special emphasis on the problems of discontinuous stabilization, robust and adaptive control, observer design, and model reduction.

Prof. Astolfi was the recipient of the IEEE Control Systems Society (CSS) A. Ruberti Young Researcher Prize (2007), the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Googol Best New Application Paper Award (2009), the IEEE CSS George S. Axelby Outstanding Paper Award (2012), and the Automatica Best Paper Award (2017). He was also the recipient of the 2015 Sir Harold Hartley Medal, for outstanding contribution to the technology of measurement and control, from the Institute of Measurement and Control. He is a Distinguished Member of the IEEE CSS, and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the International Federation of Automatic Control. He served as an Associate Editor for the Automatica, the Systems and Control Letters, the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, the International Journal of Control, the European Journal of Control, and the Journal of the Franklin Institute; an Area Editor for the International Journal of Adaptive Control and Signal Processing; a Senior Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control; and an Editor-in-Chief for the European Journal of Control. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief for the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control. He served as the Chair of the IEEE CSS Conference Editorial Board (2010–2017) and in the International Program Committee (IPC) of several international conferences. He has been a Member of the IEEE Fellow Committee (2016, 2019).

Geir E. Dullerud (F'08) received the B.A.Sc. degree in engineering science and the M.A.Sc. degree in electrical engineering both from the University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada, in 1988 and 1990, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in engineering from the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, U.K., in 1994.

Since 1998, he has been a Faculty Member with the Mechanical Science and Engineering Department, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), Urbana, IL, USA, where he is currently a Professor. He is the Director of the Decision and Control Laboratory of the Coordinated Science Laboratory. He has held visiting positions in electrical engineering at KTH, Stockholm, Sweden, in 2013, and in aeronautics and astronautics, Stanford University, Stanford, CA, USA, during 2005.2006. From 1996 to 1998, he was an Assistant Professor of applied mathematics at the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, Canada. He was a Research Fellow and Lecturer in the Control and Dynamical Systems Department, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA, USA, in 1994 and 1995. He has published two books: A Course in Robust Control Theory (Springer, 2000) and Control of Uncertain Sampled-Data Systems (Birkhauser, 1996). His current research interests include games and networked control, robotic vehicles, hybrid dynamical systems, and cyber-physical systems security.

Dr. Dullerud is currently Associate Editor of the SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization and served in a similar role for Automatica. He received the National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 1999, and the Xerox Faculty Research Award at UIUC in 2005. He became an ASME Fellow in 2011. He was an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control.

Biography

Christoforos Hadjicostis received S.B. degrees in Electrical Engineering, in Computer Science and Engineering, and in Mathematics, the M.Eng. degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 1995, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 1999, all from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA. In August 1999 he joined the Faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) where he reached the rank of Associate Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Research Associate Professor with the Coordinated Science Laboratory, and Research Associate Professor with the Information Trust Institute. In 2007, Dr. Hadjicostis joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Cyprus, where he served as Chair of the ECE Department from 2008 to 2010, and as Dean of Engineering from 2014 to 2017. He currently serves as Interim Director of the FOSS Research Center for Sustainable Energy at the University of Cyprus.

Dr. Hadjicostis teaches and conducts research in the areas of systems and control, communication, and digital signal processing. His current research focuses on fault diagnosis and tolerance in distributed dynamic systems; error control coding; distributed algorithms for monitoring, diagnosis and control; discrete event systems; and applications to power distribution networks, network security, anomaly detection, medical diagnosis, and biosequencing. Dr. Hadjicostis serves as Editor in Chief for the Journal of Discrete Event Dynamic Systems and as Associate Editor for Automatica. He has also served as Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems I (Regular Papers), IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, the Journal of Nonlinear Analysis: Hybrid Systems, and the Journal of Discrete Event Dynamic Systems, and as Editor on the Conference Editorial Board of the IEEE Control Systems Society. At the University of Illinois, Dr. Hadjicostis received the Faculty Early Development (CAREER) award from the National Science Foundation in February 2001, the ECE Faculty Outstanding Teaching Award in 2003, and the Willett Faculty Scholar recognition from the College of Engineering in 2005; at the University of Cyprus, he received a 2008 Marie Curie International Reintegration Fellowship from the European Commission. As a graduate student at MIT, he served as president of the MIT Chapter of HKN, received the Harold L. Hazen Teaching Award and the Ernst A. Guillemin Thesis Prize, and received fellowships from the National Semiconductor Corporation and the Grass Instrument Company. Dr. Hadjicostis is a member of Eta Kappa Nu and Sigma Xi, and a Fellow of the IEEE.

Biography

Prof. Christopher Kellett earned Bachelor of Science degrees in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics from the University of California Riverside in 1997, and the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of California Santa Barbara in 2000 and 2002, respectively.

He subsequently held postdoctoral research positions at Ecole des Mines de Paris (France) in the Centre d'Automatique et Systemes, at the University of Melbourne (Australia) in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and at the Hamilton Institute (Ireland), based at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. Prof. Kellett joined the School of Electrical Engineering and Computing at the University of Newcastle in 2006. He has taught a range of subjects across electrical, computer, and telecommunications engineering as well as Carbon Accounting and Energy Auditing (ENGG3860) and CCL201x - International Climate Change Law and Policy available online via edX and co-coordinated with Dr. E. Aydos (U. Newcastle, Newcastle Law School) and A/Prof. S. Rudolph (Kyoto University). In 2020 Prof. Kellett moved to the Australian National University to take up the role of Director of the Research School of Electrical, Energy, and Materials Engineering, while maintaining a conjoint appointment at the University of Newcastle in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences.

From 2012-2016, Prof. Kellett was supported by an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship. He has been awarded the Vice-Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (2011) and a Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Germany, 2012-2013). In 2013 he was one of eight Australian researchers selected for the Australia-Japan Emerging Research Leaders Exchange Program jointly sponsored by the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, the Engineering Academy of Japan, and the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science.

In 2012, jointly with co-authors Dr. B. Rüffer (U. Newcastle), A/Prof. P. Dower (U. Melbourne), and Prof. S. Weller (U. Newcastle), Prof. Kellett received the IET Control Theory and its Applications Premium Award for the best paper published in the journal in 2010-2011. In 2017, jointly with co-authors Salman Hafeez (U. Newcastle) and Prof. S. Weller (U. Newcastle) he received the inaugural IFAC Foundation Award for demonstrating contributions of systems and control techniques in the area of sustainable development.

Prof. Kellett is an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, IEEE Control Systems Letters, and Mathematics of Control, Signals and Systems. He was previously an Associate Editor for the European Journal on Control (2013-2019) and was a member of the IEEE Control Systems Society Conference Editorial Board during 2007-2017. He has served on the International Program Committees for several IFAC (International Federation on Automatic Control) conferences.

Biography

Themistoklis Charalambous received his BA (First Class Honours) and M.Eng (Distinction) in Electrical and Information Sciences from Trinity College, Cambridge University. He completed his PhD studies in the Control Laboratory, of the Engineering Department, Cambridge University in 2009. Following his PhD, he joined the Human Robotics Group as a Research Associate at Imperial College London for an academic year (September 2009-September 2010). Between September 2010 and December 2011, he worked as a Visiting Lecturer at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Cyprus. Between January 2012 and January 2015, he worked at the Division of Decision and Control of the Department of Intelligent Systems at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) as a Postdoctoral Researcher. Between April 2015 and December 2016, he worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Unit of Communication Systems at the Department of Electrical Engineering of Chalmers University of Technology. In January 2017, he joined Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation, School of Electrical Engineering, Aalto University as a tenure-track Assistant Professor. In September 2018, he was awarded the Academy of Finland Research Fellowship and in July 2020 he was appointed as a tenured Associate Professor. In September 2021, he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Cyprus as a tenure-track Assistant Professor and he remains associated with Aalto University as a Visiting Professor. Since April 2023, he is also a Visiting Professor at the FinEst Centre for Smart Cities.

His primary research targets the design and analysis of (wireless) networked control systems that are stable, scalable and energy efficient. The study of such systems involves the interaction between dynamical systems, their communication and the integration of these concepts. As a result, his research is interdisciplinary combining theory and applications from control theory, communications, network and distributed optimization.

Cristian Mahulea is an Associate Professor (Profesor Titular de Universidad) at the University of Zaragoza (Spain) with the Department of Computer Science and Systems Engineering.

He received the Laurea and M.S. degrees in control engineering from the "Gheorghe Asachi" Technical University of Iasi (Romania), in 2001 and 2002, respectively, and Ph.D. degree in systems engineering from the University of Zaragoza (Spain) in 2007. He joined the University of Zaragoza in 2008 as assistant professor, becoming associate professor in 2017. He was visiting professor at the University of Cagliari (Italy) with the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering during five months in 2008 and 2010.

His research interests include discrete-event systems, hybrid systems, automated manufacturing, Petri nets, mobile robotics and healthcare systems. He co-authored, with Mihaela Matcovschi and Octavian Pastravanu the book Applications of Petri Nets in Studying Discrete Event Systems, Iasi, Romania in 2002 and co-authored with Marius Kloetzer and Ramon Gonzalez the book Path Planning of Cooperative Mobile Robots Using Discrete Event Models, Wiley-IEEE Press, January 2020. He participated and was the main developer of one MATLAB toolbox called Petri Net Toolbox for the simulation, analysis and synthesis of discrete-event systems modeled with discrete Petri nets and one Matlab toolbox called RMTool for path planning and motion control of mobile robots.

He has been a Visiting Researcher at the University of Sheffield (U.K.), University of Cagliari (Italy), Boston University (USA) and ENS Paris-Saclay (France).

He is a Senior Member of IEEE.

Biography

Andreas Malikopoulos is a Professor in the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering and the Director of the Information and Decision Science Lab at Cornell University. Prior to these appointments, he was the Terri Connor Kelly and John Kelly Career Development Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (2017-2023) and the founding Director of the Sociotechnical Systems Center (2019-2023) at the University of Delaware (UD). Before he joined UD, he was the Alvin M. Weinberg Fellow (2010-2017) in the Energy & Transportation Science Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the Deputy Director of the Urban Dynamics Institute (2014-2017) at ORNL, and a Senior Researcher in General Motors Global Research & Development (2008-2010).

Dr. Malikopoulos is the recipient of several prizes and awards, including the 2007 Dare to Dream Opportunity Grant from the University of Michigan Ross School of Business, the 2007 University of Michigan Teaching Fellow, the 2010 Alvin M. Weinberg Fellowship, the 2019 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Young Researcher Award, and the 2020 UD’s College of Engineering Outstanding Junior Faculty Award. He has been selected by the National Academy of Engineering to participate in the 2010 German-American Frontiers of Engineering (FOE) Symposium and organize a session on transportation at the 2016 European-American FOE Symposium. He has also been selected as a 2012 Kavli Frontiers of Science Scholar by the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Malikopoulos has been an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Vehicles and IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems from 2017 through 2020. He is currently an Associate Editor of Automatica and IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, a Fellow of the ASME, and a member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society.

Biography

Prashant Mehta received his M.S. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1996 and the Ph.d. degree in Applied Mathematics from Cornell University in 2004 (with Prof. Tim Healey). He is now an Associate Professor of Mechanical Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He is affiliated with the Coordinated Science Laboratory, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and the Neuroscience program at UIUC. He was the co-founder and the Chief Science Officer of the startup Rithmio whose gesture recognition technology was acquired by Bosch Sensortec in 2017. Prior to his academic appointment at UIUC in 2005, he worked at United Technologies Research Center (1996-98 and 2002-05) where he invented the symmetry-breaking solution to suppress combustion instabilities. This solution — which helped solve a sixty-year-old open problem — has since become an industry standard and is widely deployed in jet engines and afterburners sold by Pratt & Whitney.

At UIUC, Prashant works with his students on mathematical and computational aspects of dynamics and control theory. His most significant recent contribution is the feedback particle filter algorithm (see recent projects for details on ongoing research in his lab). He is passionate about working with and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. His students have won the best paper awards at IEEE CDC 2007 and 2009 and have been finalists for the best paper awards at ACC 2010 and at IEEE CDC 2012. He teaches dynamics and control classes as well as the graduate course sequence on engineering mathematics (see list of courses taught). For his teaching, he frequently makes the Incomplete list of teachers rated as excellent at UIUC.

He has served as the Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control (2019-), Systems and Control Letters (2011-14) and the ASME Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement and Control (2012-16). He guest-edited the special issue of the ASME Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement and Control to commemorate the life, achievements and impact of Rudolph E. Kalman.

Biography

Dr. Tansel Yucelen is an Assistant Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the Director of the LACIS, and the Director of the Forum on Robotics and Control Engineering (FoRCE) at the University of South Florida. He received the Doctor of Philosophy in Aerospace Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in May 2012. Prior to joining the University of South Florida, he held Research Engineer positions in the School of Aerospace Engineering and the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology from December 2011 to August 2013. He also held an Assistant Professor position in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology from August 2013 to August 2016, where he created and directed the Advanced Systems Research Laboratory and the Control Systems Forum. He participated in summer programs at the Air Force Research Laboratory Aerospace System Directorate in Dayton, Ohio, from May 2014 to July 2014 and at the Munitions Directorate in Eglin, Florida from May 2015 to July 2015.

Dr. Yucelen is a member of the National Academy of Inventors in recognition of advanced technological development and innovation and a senior member of the AIAA and the IEEE. In addition, he is the recipient of the 2018 University of South Florida Research and Innovation Faculty Outstanding Research Achievement Award, 2017 University of South Florida College of Engineering Junior Outstanding Research Achievement Award, 2016 ACGSC Dave Ward Memorial Lecture Award (for the outstanding contributions to the field of adaptive control), 2016 AIAA Technical Contribution Award (for the creation of novel flight control synthesis and analysis algorithms), 2015 Oak Ridge Associated Universities Junior Faculty Award (for public recognition of the quality and promise of research), and 2014 Class of 1942 Excellence in Teaching Award. His research places a strong emphasis on both theoretic research and experimentation for addressing fundamental and open real-world technological problems. Specifically, his research falls into dynamical systems and controls with specializations in 1) adaptive and robust control of safety-critical systems; 2) distributed estimation and control of networked multiagent systems; 3) resilient and secure robotics, autonomous vehicles, and cyber-physical systems; and 4) biologically-inspired complex, large-scale, and modular systems. He has co-authored more than 200 archival journal and conference publications in these areas and his contributions were implemented on various platforms including AirSTAR of the NASA Langley Research Center.

Dr. Yucelen is an active member of the AIAA, ASME, and IEEE societies as well as AIAA Technical Committee (TC) on Guidance, Navigation, and Control (invited by Dave Doman and Susan Frost), AIAA TC on Intelligent Systems (invited by Nhan Nguyen), IEEE TC on Adaptive Dynamic Programming and Reinforcement Learning (invited by Silvia Ferrari), IEEE TC on Aerospace Control (invited by Kingsley Fregene), IEEE TC on Control Education, IEEE TC on Intelligent Control (invited by Jagannathan Sarangapani), IEEE TC on System Identification and Adaptive Control, and IFAC TC on Adaptive and Learning Systems (invited by Fouad Giri). He is also the creator of the Guidance, Navigation, and Control Listserv - a communication tool for researchers and educators in the Guidance, Navigation, and Control field. Dr. Yucelen's additional professional experiences include the organization of 2 local workshops at the University of South Florida; 5 workshops and 4 invited sessions at the top scientific and engineering conferences on dynamical systems and controls; and various associate editor, conference program committee, conference technical area chair, conference session chair, and reviewer roles.

Biography

Jing Zhou is a Professor at the Faculty of Engineering and Science, University of Agder, Norway. She is the leader of Robotics and Automation group, and the research director of Priority Research Center of Mechatronics. Prior to joining the University of Agder in 2016, she was a senior research scientist at International Research Institute of Stavanger in Norway from 2009 to 2016 and a Postdoctoral fellow at Norwegian University of Science and Technology from 2007 to 2009, respectively. She received the Ph.D. degree from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore in 2006. Her research interests include adaptive control, nonlinear control, adaptive dynamics programming control, non-smooth nonlinearities, network control systems, robotics and mechatronics, and control applications to offshore operations, drilling and well systems, crane systems, marine vessels, and energy systems.

Dr. Zhou is a Fellow of Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences (NTVA) and holds a position as an AdCom members-at-large at IEEE Industrial Electronics Society. She serves as an Associate Editor for several journals, including IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics, IEEE Transactions on Neural networks and Learning Systems, Systems & Control Letters, and the Conference Editorial Board of the IEEE Control Systems Society. She has been actively involved in organizing IEEE conferences in the roles of General Chair, General Co-Chair, Technical Program Chair, Technical Program Committee, Invited Session Chair.
