Thomas B. Schön is Professor of the Chair of Automatic Control in the Department of Information Technology at Uppsala University. He received the PhD degree in Automatic Control in Feb. 2006, the MSc degree in Applied Physics and Electrical Engineering in Sep. 2001, the BSc degree in Business Administration and Economics in Jan. 2001, all from Linköping University. He has held visiting positions with the University of Cambridge (UK), the University of Newcastle (Australia) and Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (Valparaíso, Chile). In 2018, he was elected to The Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) and The Royal Society of Sciences at Uppsala. He received the Tage Erlander prize for natural sciences and technology in 2017 and the Arnberg prize in 2016, both awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (KVA). He was awarded the Automatica Best Paper Prize in 2014, and in 2013 he received the best PhD thesis award by The European Association for Signal Processing. He received the best teacher award at the Institute of Technology, Linköping University in 2009. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and a fellow of the ELLIS society.

Schön has a broad interest in developing new algorithms and mathematical models capable of learning from data. His main scientific field is Machine Learning, but he also regularly publishes in other fields such as Statistics, Automatic Control, Signal Processing and Computer Vision. He pursues both basic research and applied research, where the latter is typically carried out in collaboration with industry or applied research groups. Biography

Jonathan P. How is the Richard C. Maclaurin Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received a B.A.Sc. (Aerospace) from the University of Toronto in 1987, and his S.M. and Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT in 1990 and 1993, respectively, and then studied for 1.5 years at MIT as a postdoctoral associate. Prior to joining MIT in 2000, he was an assistant professor in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Stanford University. Dr. How was the editor-in-chief of the IEEE Control Systems Magazine (2015-19), an associate editor for the AIAA Journal of Aerospace Information Systems (2012-21) and IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems (2018-21). He was the Program Vice-chair (tutorials) for the 2021 Conference on Decision and Control and will be the Program Chair for the American Control Conference in 2025. He was elected to the Board of Governors of the IEEE Control System Society (CSS) for 2020-22, is on the IEEE CSS Long Range Planning Committee (2022 – ), is a member of the IEEE CSS Technical Committee on Aerospace Control and the Technical Committee on Intelligent Control, was a member of the IEEE Fellows Selection committee for CSS (2021-22), and since 2021, he serves as the AIAA Director on the American Automatic Control Council. He is also the Director of the Ford-MIT Alliance and was a member of the USAF Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) from 2014-17. His research focuses on robust planning and learning under uncertainty with an emphasis on multiagent systems, and he was the planning and control lead for the MIT DARPA Urban Challenge team. His work has been recognized with multiple awards, including being inducted into the University of Toronto Engineering Hall of Distinction (2022), receiving the 2020 IEEE CSS Distinguished Member Award, the 2020 AIAA Intelligent Systems Award, the 2015 AeroLion Technologies Outstanding Paper Award for Unmanned Systems, the 2015 IEEE CSS Video Clip Contest, the 2011 IFAC Automatica award for best applications paper, and the 2002 Institute of Navigation Burka Award. He also received the Air Force Commander's Public Service Award in 2017. He is a Fellow of IEEE (2018) and AIAA (2016) and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2021.

Biography

Yildiray Yildiz is an assistant professor and director of the Systems Lab at Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey. He received the B.S. degree (valedictorian) in mechanical engineering from the Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey, in 2002; the M.S. degree in mechatronics engineering from Sabanci University, Istanbul, Turkey, in 2004; and the Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering with a mathematics minor from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, in 2009. He held postdoctoral associate and associate scientist positions with NASA Ames Research Center, Mountain View, California, from 2009 to 2010, and he was employed by the University of California, Santa Cruz, through its University Affiliated Research Center from 2010 to 2014. He is the recipient of the ASME Best Student Paper in Conference award (2008), the NASA Group Achievement Award (2012) for outstanding technology development of the CAPIO system at the Vertical Motion Simulator supporting NASA’s Green Aviation Initiative, and the Turkish Science Academy’s Young Scientist Award (2017). He was a member of the AIAA Guidance, Navigation, and Control Technical Committee from 2010 to 2013. He has been an IEEE Conference Editorial Board associate editor since 2015 and an associate editor for IEEE Control Systems Magazine since 2016. His research interests include adaptive control, time-delay systems, applications of game theory, applications of reinforcement learning, automotive control, and aerospace control.
