Dr. Bequette worked for three years as a process engineer for American Petrofina between his undergraduate and graduate studies. From 1986 to 1987 he was a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Texas and from 1987 to 1988 he was a Visiting Lecturer at the University of California at Davis. He joined the Rensselaer faculty in 1988 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1994 and Professor in 2000. Dr. Bequette was on sabbatical leave during the 1995-6 academic year, spending the fall semester at Merck Research Laboratories and the spring at Northwestern University.

Dr. Bequette served as an Associate Editor for Automatica from 1993-2005. He was also the Program Chair of the 2001 American Control Conference (Washington, D.C.), the General Chair of the 2003 American Control Conference (Denver), and the AIChE Director on the Board of the American Automatic Control Council (2000-1). He was the Chair of the Computing and Systems Technology (CAST) Division of AIChE in 2006, and the President of the American Automatic Control Council (AACC) in 2008-9. He currently serves as the AIChE CAST Division Programming Chair (2010-2013). He is a Fellow of the AIChE (May 2008), was inducted into the Arkansas Academy of Chemical Engineers (April 2007), received the Rensselaer School of Engineering Research Excellence Award (2008), and was named a Trustee of the CACHE Corporation (2010-2012).

Dr. Bequette is the author of Process Control: Modeling, Design and Simulation (2003) and Process Dynamics: Modeling, Analysis and Simulation (1998), both published by Prentice Hall. He served as the Guest Editor of Diabetes Technology and Therapeutics (February 2005), for a Symposium on Algorithms for Continuous Glucose Monitoring and Control. Dr. Bequette also edited special issues on Process Control for the IEEE Control Systems Magazine (August and December 2006). He is a founding member of the editorial board of the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology and has co-edited a number of special issues on algorithms for sensors and a closed-loop artificial pancreas

Biography

Prof. Warren Dixon received his Ph.D. in 2000 from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering from Clemson University. He worked as a research staff member and Eugene P. Wigner Fellow at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) until 2004, when he joined the University of Florida in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department. His main research interest has been the development and application of Lyapunov-based control techniques for uncertain nonlinear systems. His work has been recognized by the 2019 IEEE Control Systems Technology Award, (2017-2018 & 2012-2013) University of Florida College of Engineering Doctoral Dissertation Mentoring Award, 2015 & 2009 American Automatic Control Council (AACC) O. Hugo Schuck (Best Paper) Award, the 2013 Fred Ellersick Award for Best Overall MILCOM Paper, the 2011 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Dynamics Systems and Control Division Outstanding Young Investigator Award, the 2006 IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) Early Academic Career Award, an NSF CAREER Award (2006-2011), the 2004 Department of Energy Outstanding Mentor Award, and the 2001 ORNL Early Career Award for Engineering Achievement. He is an ASME Fellow and IEEE Fellow, an IEEE Control Systems Society (CSS) Distinguished Lecturer, and served as the Director of Operations for the Executive Committee of the IEEE CSS Board of Governors (2012-2015). He was awarded the Air Force Commander's Public Service Award (2016) for his contributions to the U.S. Air Force Science Advisory Board. He is currently or formerly an associate editor for ASME Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement and Control, Automatica, IEEE Control Systems, IEEE Transactions on Systems Man and Cybernetics: Part B Cybernetics, and the International Journal of Robust and Nonlinear Control.

Biography

Laura Giarré received the Laurea degree in electronic engineering from the Universitá di Firenze, Italy, and the Ph.D. degree in system engineering from the Universitá di Bologna, Italy, in 1986 and 1992, respectively. She has held visiting positions at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of California at Santa Barbara, CA, USA, and the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems and Computer Science Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, MIT, Cambridge, MA, USA, in 1999, 2006, and 2015, respectively. Since 1993, she has been an Assistant Professor with the Politecnico di Torino, Turin, Italy, and an Associate Professor with the University of Palermo, Palermo, Italy, since 1998. Her research interests include networked systems, according to a game theoretical approach with applications to WiFi networks, sensor networks, inventory networks, and smart grid. She worked also on identification of LPV, nonlinear and networked systems, and e-health solutions for interoperability. In 2013, she received the national qualification (ASN) for full professor. She served as an Associate Editor of Systems and Control Letters from 1999 to 2011 and the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control from 2012 to 2015. In 2010, she was the Vice Chair of SING6 and the General Chair of the IEEE MED in 2014. She has recently developed an interest in assistive technology for visually impaired persons, organizing and chairing three workshops (2012 Pisa, 2013 Boston, 2015 Milan EXPO) on this theme, and co-founded the startup insight to develop systems enhancing senses through technology for which she is the CEO.

Jin-Oh Hahn (Senior Member, IEEE) received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in mechanical engineering from Seoul National University, in 1997 and 1999, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in 2008. He is currently with the University of Maryland, where he is also an Associate Professor with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, a Faculty Affiliate with the Robert E. Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices, and a Faculty Affiliate with the Applied Mathematics, Statistics, and Scientific Computation (AMSC) Program. His current research interests include applications of dynamical systems, control, and machine learning theory to health monitoring, fault diagnostics, maintenance, and treatment of dynamical systems with emphasis on health and medicine. He was a recipient of the Young Investigator Grant Award from the Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association (KSEA), in 2013, the Young Investigator Program Award from the Office of Naval Research (ONR), in 2014, the Best Bio-Systems and Healthcare Paper Award from the Bio-Systems and Healthcare Technical Committee in the Dynamic Systems and Control (DSC) Division of ASME, in 2017, the Faculty Early Career Development (CARRER) Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF), in 2018, the IEEE EMBS Most Impactful Paper Award from the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, in 2019, and the Outstanding Gemstone Mentor Award from the Gemstone Honors Program at the University of Maryland, in 2019. Biography

Juergen Hahn is the department head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in addition to holding an appointment in the Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering. He received his Diploma degree in engineering from RWTH Aachen, Germany, in 1997, and his MS and Ph.D. degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Texas, Austin, in 1998 and 2002, respectively. He was a post-doctoral researcher at the Chair for Process Systems Engineering at RWTH Aachen, Germany, before joining the Department of Chemical Engineering at Texas A&M University, College Station, in 2003 and moving to the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2012. His research interests include systems biology and process modeling and analysis with over 140 peer-reviewed publications in print. Dr. Hahn is a recipient of a Fulbright scholarship (1995/96), received the Best Referee Award for 2004 from the Journal of Process Control, the CPC 7 Outstanding Contributed Paper Award in 2006, was named Outstanding Reviewer by the journal Automatica in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2010 CAST Outstanding Young Researcher, and has been elected as an AIMBE Fellow in 2013 and an AIChE Fellow in 2020. He served on the IEEE CSS Board of Governors in 2016 and has been a CACHE Trustee since 2014. He is currently serving as deputy editor-in-chief for the Journal of Process Control, as editor for the journal Optimal Control: Applications and Methods, and as associate editor for the journals Control Engineering Practice and the Journal of Advanced Manufacturing and Processing.

Biography

Andreas Malikopoulos is a Professor in the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering and the Director of the Information and Decision Science Lab at Cornell University. Prior to these appointments, he was the Terri Connor Kelly and John Kelly Career Development Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (2017-2023) and the founding Director of the Sociotechnical Systems Center (2019-2023) at the University of Delaware (UD). Before he joined UD, he was the Alvin M. Weinberg Fellow (2010-2017) in the Energy & Transportation Science Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the Deputy Director of the Urban Dynamics Institute (2014-2017) at ORNL, and a Senior Researcher in General Motors Global Research & Development (2008-2010).

Dr. Malikopoulos is the recipient of several prizes and awards, including the 2007 Dare to Dream Opportunity Grant from the University of Michigan Ross School of Business, the 2007 University of Michigan Teaching Fellow, the 2010 Alvin M. Weinberg Fellowship, the 2019 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Young Researcher Award, and the 2020 UD’s College of Engineering Outstanding Junior Faculty Award. He has been selected by the National Academy of Engineering to participate in the 2010 German-American Frontiers of Engineering (FOE) Symposium and organize a session on transportation at the 2016 European-American FOE Symposium. He has also been selected as a 2012 Kavli Frontiers of Science Scholar by the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Malikopoulos has been an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Vehicles and IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems from 2017 through 2020. He is currently an Associate Editor of Automatica and IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, a Fellow of the ASME, and a member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society.

Biography

Yannis Paschalidis is a Distinguished Professor of Engineering at Boston University (BU) with appointments in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Computing & Data Sciences at Boston University. He is the Director of the Hariri Institute for Computing and Computational Science & Engineering -- BU's federation and convergence accelerator of all University centers and initiatives in this area of research. He obtained a Diploma (1991) from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, and an M.S. (1993) and a Ph.D. (1996) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), all in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He has been at Boston University since 1996. His current research interests lie in the fields of optimization, control, stochastic systems, robust learning, computational medicine, and computational biology. He has published a monograph and more than 250 refereed papers in these topics, and he has been the primary advisor to 29 Ph.D. theses.

Prof. Paschalidis' work has been recognized with a CAREER award (2000) from the U.S. National Science Foundation, the second prize in the 1997 George E. Nicholson

paper competition by INFORMS, the best student paper award at the 9th Intl. Symposium of Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks (WiOpt 2011) won by one of his Ph.D. students for a joint paper, an IBM/IEEE Smarter Planet Challenge Award, and a finalist best paper award at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA). His work on protein docking has been recognized for best performance in modeling selected protein-protein complexes against 64 other predictor groups (2009 Protein Interaction Evaluation Meeting). His recent work on health informatics won an IEEE Computer Society Crowd Sourcing Prize and a best paper award by the International Medical Informatics Associations (IMIA). He was an invited participant at the 2002 Frontiers of Engineering Symposium organized by the National Academy of Engineering, and at the 2014 National Academies Keck Futures Initiative (NAFKI) Conference. Prof. Paschalidis is a Fellow of both IEEE and IFAC and was the founding Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Control of Network Systems from 2013 until 2019. He is currently the Vice President of Publication Activities of the IEEE Control Systems Society.

Biography

Professor Piovoso spent 33 years with the DuPont Company, retired, and for nearly the last 16 years, has been a Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University. Since July, 2015, Professor Piovoso is Professor Emeritus. While at DuPont, Professor Piovoso was involved in the control of chemical process systems. His research was on the application of multivariate statistics to complex dynamic system. Together with colleagues at DuPont, Professor Piovoso developed the first system to monitor a chemical process based on multivariate statistics. Using data taken during periods when the process is working well, the natural fluctuations are model using principal component analysis. This model is then used to test process operations. If the variability is consistent with normal operation, the system is assumed to be producing a high quality product. If the variations are abnormal, the system defines which variables are misbehaving. This work resulted in the awarding of the Control Systems Technology Award by the IEEE Control Systems Society.

While at Penn State, Professor Piovoso began collaborating with Professor Zurakowski from the University of Delaware on system biology. In particular, Professor Piovoso, together with Dr. Zurakowski’s group, helped develop mathematical models for HIV and its interaction with drugs and obtained accurate estimates of model parameters and their likely distribution. Later, a study of HIV patients whose virus was under control and then administered an additional drug, raltegravir, became available. Raltegravir targets an HIV enzyme, integrase and prevents the integration of the viral genetic material into human chromosomes. Failure to integrate produces 2-‐LTR circles which were measured in the patients after administering the drug. This data of 2-‐LTR circles over time was model. The model’s behavior for approximately 1/3 of the patients, could only be explained by on-going viral replication. We hypothesized that this replication was occurring in lymph nodes. This conclusion is contrary to existing theory on the persistence of HIV virus. Models of how viral replication might be occurring in lymph nodes produced LTR circles consistent with measured results.

Nitin Sharma received the B.E. degree in Industrial Engineering from Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, India, in 2004, and the M.S. degree and the Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, University of Florida, Gainesville, in 2008 and 2010 respectively. He was an Alberta Innovates-Health Solutions Post-Doctoral Fellow with the Department of Physiology, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. From 2012-2017, he was an Assistant Professor with the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science, University of Pittsburgh, and was promoted to an Associate Professor in 2018. In 2019, he joined the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at North Carolina State University-Raleigh and University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He has won O. Hugo Schuck Award for the Best Application Paper from the 2008 American Control Conference. His research in hybrid exoskeletons is funded by NSF awards and NIH. His awards include NSF CAREER Award in 2018, IEEE Control Systems Technology Award 2019, and NIBIB Trailblazer Award in 2021.

Research Interests: His research interests include the modeling, optimization, and control of functional electrical stimulation (FES), hybrid exoskeletons that combine FES and a powered exoskeleton. His research group has recently started looking into using ultrasound imaging-derived sensing signals to address human-robot interaction problems in rehabilitation.
