The United Nations, through the Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger, certify the need for increasing food production to feed a growing global population. Unfortunately, current agricultural practices are not sustainable due to their tremendous environmental impact, critically spanning deforestation, water scarcity, and greenhouse gas emissions.

As recognized in the Control for Societal-Scale Challenges: 2030 Roadmap, control methodologies can play a key role in increasing food production while reducing the environmental footprint. The TC aims to foster the development and application of control strategies for sustainable agriculture and future food systems. Key aspects are:

  • Data collection and monitoring: integration of sensors, communication networks, IoT, data analytics, and machine learning for agriculture and food production.
  • Ecological modelling: creation and analysis of mathematical models of agricultural ecosystems, including crops, pest populations, plants, diseases, and water resources.
  • Precision agriculture: development of control methodologies for decision making and resource management, including state estimation, control, and intervention scheduling.
  • Food automation: design of control strategies for food processing, packaging, quality assurance, and safety.
  • Food supply chains and logistics: optimization of supply chain operations, including transportation, storage, and distribution.
  • Robotics: development of robotic, autonomous, and intelligent systems for agriculture and food production.
  • Environmental sustainability: development of control methodologies for sustainable agriculture and food production, including energy efficiency, waste reduction, and emissions mitigation.

The TC warmly welcomes new members. If you are interested in joining, please contact the Chair Prof. Emanuele Garone.
