Panagiotis Tsiotras

Biography

Panagiotis Tsiotras is the David and Andrew Lewis Endowed Chair Professor at the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace. From 2017-2024 he served as an Associate Director of the Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Machines. He did his undergraduate studies in Mechanical Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece. He received his PhD degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Purdue University, and he also holds MS degrees in Aerospace Engineering from Virginia Tech and Mathematics from Purdue. Over the years, he has held visiting research appointments with Virginia Tech, INRIA Rocquencourt (France), Ecole Nationale Superieure des Mines de Paris (France), JPL and MIT. His current research interests are in optimal, stochastic, and nonlinear control and their connections with AI and real-time decision-making, emphasizing applications to autonomous agents and systems. He has published over 450 journal and conference articles in these and related areas (H-index 71), while his students have received numerous “best paper” and “best dissertation” awards over the years. He is currently the Chief Editor of Space Robotics in the Frontiers of Robotics and AI and an Associate Editor of the Dynamics Games and Applications. Previously, he served on the Editorial Boards of the AIAA Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics, the IEEE Transactions of Automatic Control, the IEEE Control Systems Magazine, and the Journal of Dynamical and Control Systems. He is a recipient of the NSF CAREER award, the Sigma Xi Society Excellence in Research award, the Purdue University School of Aeronautics and Astronautics’ Outstanding Aerospace Engineer Award, and the IEEE Technical Excellence Award in Aerospace Control. He is a Fellow of AIAA, IEEE, and AAS, and a member of the Phi Kappa Phi, Tau Beta Pi, and Sigma Gamma Tau Honor Societies.
