CSS Technical Activities

Control Systems Society Technical Committees organize activities around a specific technical area. Typical activities include organizing invited sessions for conferences, special issues in journals, technical meetings (workshops and conferences), maintaining websites for technical resources, and publishing electronic newsletters that focus on various technical areas.

Automotive Control

Automotive Controls Technical Committee Chair

The scope of interest of the Technical Committee on Automotive Control covers modeling, simulation, identification, estimation, control and diagnostics of present and future automotive systems. The Technical Committee has been in existence since 1999 and has approximately 50 active members, with many other researchers in the field benefiting from its activities. Benefiting from both academic and significant industrial participation, the committee coordinates activities towards improving understanding of challenges, problems and effective methods of controlling automotive systems. The Technical committee is not planning, at the present time, to cover the area of Intelligent Highway Transportation Systems.

Major conferences at which the IEEE TCAC organizes invited technical sessions include the American Control Conference and the IEEE Multi-Conference on Decision and Control.  Other activities of the committee include organization of the bi-annual "Workshop on Challenges and Open Problems in Automotive Control" and organization of special issues on automotive control in IEEE journals.

The IEEE Technical Committee on Automotive Control regularly and synergistically collaborates with similar organizations of ASME, SAE and IFAC, specifically, with the ASME Automotive and Transportation Systems Technical Committee, the IFAC Technical Committee on Automotive Control and the SAE Automotive Controls Committee.

Discrete Event Systems

A discrete event system is a dynamic system with discrete states the transitions of which are triggered by events. This provides a general framework for many man-made systems where the system dynamics not only follow physical laws but also the man-made rules. It is difficult to describe the dynamics of these systems using closed-form expressions. In many cases simulation is the only faithful way to describe the system dynamics and for performance evaluation. It is the focus of this TC to promote the research on performance analysis, evaluation, and optimization of discrete event systems. The interested topics include but do not limit to:

  • Theory and applications of discrete event systems
  • Deterministic and stochastic event-based models
  • Supervisory control

Distributed Parameter Systems

The purpose of the IEEE TC on DPS is to promote activities within the field of distributed parameter systems (infinite dimensional systems modeled by delay or partial differential equations) fostering development of both basic scientific methodology and emerging applications.The research activities are related to modeling, analysis, estimation, control and numerical simulation and analysis of these systems. Specifically, the following is a concise summary of this Technical Committee’s goals and the website is to serve as a resource for researchers and engineers working in areas related to DPS.

The activities include the following:

  • organizing tracks of invited sessions, panel discussions, tutorials, minicourses at the IEEE CSS meetings

Healthcare and Medical Systems

The mission of the CSS Technical Committee on HealthCare and Medical Systems (TC-HCMS) is broad and multifaceted, emphasizing the extension and application of control systems principles to problems in biomedicine, disease treatment and management, healthcare delivery, behavioral health, and personalized medicine.  
Among the topics of interest currently pursued by the TC membership are anesthesia modeling and delivery, HIV treatment, stroke rehabilitation, development of assistive devices and therapeutics, diabetes management and the artificial pancreas, analysis of electronic medical records, cancer treatment, treatment of Parkinson’s, electrocardiography, and prevention and treatment of drug abuse.

Hybrid Systems

The Technical Committee on Hybrid Systems is dedicated to providing informational forums, meetings for technical discussion, and information over the web to researchers in the IEEE CSS who are interested in the field of hybrid systems and its applications.

The TC on Hybrid Systems organizes and supports conferences and educational events related to hybrid systems theory and applications. The main events dedicated to Hybrid Systems are the Hybrid Systems: Computation and Control Conference (HSCC), which is part of the Cyber-Physical Systems Week, sponsored by IEEE, and the Analysis and Design of Hybrid Systems Conference (ADHS), which is organized by IFAC.

The IEEE CSS TC on Hybrid Systems collaborates closely with its corresponding IFAC Technical Committee 1.3 Discrete Event and Hybrid Systems in organizing joint discussions during yearly IEEE and IFAC conferences.

Manufacturing Automation and Robotic Control

Networks and Communication Systems

Mission Statement

There has been an increasing volume of research on networks within the CSS community. This research is not confined to work on traditional communication networks, but also extends to a broader set of networks including other technological networks such as transportation and energy networks, social, economic, and financial networks, and biological networks.

The IEEE Technical Committee on Networks and Communications aims to promote communication among researchers active in networks area. It provides a forum to discuss new research directions on modeling, analysis, optimization and control of emerging networks, both with social and technological aspects. It allows members to coordinate activities including organization of new workshops and several invited sessions on networks in ACC and CDC. Another important objective is to increase CSS publications that could provide a visible outlet for high quality research in this area.

Power Generation

As the world population grows and becomes more developed, the energy demand steadily increases while conventional energy sources deplete. It is a fact that power generation is becoming more expensive and its environmental impact starts to be felt. To avoid a potential energy shortfall worldwide without impacting the environment, there is an urgent need to develop new sources of clean energy, make current sources of energy cleaner and optimize energy utilization. It is anticipated that systems, optimization and control methodologies will play a crucial role in this endeavor.

The mission of the Technical Committee on Power Generation within the IEEE Control Systems Society (CSS) is to nourish incipient research efforts and foster interactions among energy/power engineers/scientists and control theorists. The Technical Committee is responsible for the promotion, coordination and organization of activities sponsored by the IEEE CSS at the boundary of energy/power generation/utilization and controls. This includes the organization of special sessions, workshops, and mini-courses at international conferences, the edition of special issues in scientific journals, the dissemination of relevant information (upcoming conferences and events, funding opportunities, job opportunities, etc.), and the distribution of educational material.

The Technical Committee draws researchers from both academia and industry working at the boundary of Energy/Power Systems and Optimization/Control Theory. The technical committee members are organized around four thrusts: Nuclear Energy Generation, Fossil Energy Generation, Renewable Energy Generation and Efficient Energy Utilization. The Technical Committee addresses all aspects of modeling, simulation, control and optimization of energy generation and energy utilization systems. Control problems associated with the integration into the grid of distributed power sources, particularly those based on renewable resources (hydro, wind, solar, biomass, etc.), are within the scope of the Technical Committee. However, those researchers more interested in energy distribution systems are invited to visit the web page of the IEEE-CSS Technical Committee on Smart Grids.

Process Control

Process control has long been associated with the control of chemical and petrochemical processes. The process control community has evolved considerably over the last 25 years. This community, which has been predominantly associated with the chemical and petrochemical industry, has been increasingly involved in the research and development of many new application areas. Correspondingly, many key process control technologies, such as MPC, have found a very broad spectrum of application which goes beyond the traditional control of industrial processes.

The activities of the members of the TC are varied and reflect the research activity of our TC members which go far beyond the traditional control of industrial processes. Our members, and the process control community in general, tackle many problems in diverse areas that include systems biology, energy systems, nano-technology and biomedical systems that do not qualify as industrial scale applications.

Robust and Complex Systems

This TC will provide a venue for the discussion of computational aspects of the analysis and design of systems, with particular emphasis on the fact that practitioners are now often faced with very large data sets (Big Data) that might be fragmented and/or subject to significant noise. To use such Big Data effectively for the analysis and design of systems, we need dedicated mathematical/computational tools.  The aim is not only to focus on traditional approaches used in control analysis/design but also to discuss how tools from other areas such as computer science or artificial intelligence can be used to solve such complex problems. A special emphasis will be placed on how to design resilient systems that are able to cope with model uncertainty, perturbations, attacks, and changes in the environment they operate in.

Mission Statement

To understand, anticipate, and respond to current and future Smart Grids' control needs and opportunities in a broad array of areas, including:

  1. TC on Smart Grids (TC-SG) convenes and works with systems and controls colleagues on the greatest smart grid challenges by providing technical resources, collaboration opportunities, and partnerships for numerous researchers world-wide, who are engaged in smart grids, in academic institutions, government laboratories, and industrial companies.
  2. We exist to highlight controls activities and opportunities in smart grids to the controls community:
  • The power grid 2.0 presents the greatest potential opportunity for the controls community to make significant societal contributions across the world. Challenges faced by the power grid are much more systems problems that they are traditional power problems.
  • Control systems are needed across broad temporal, geographical, and industry scales--from devices to power-system-wide, from fuel sources to consumers, from utility pricing to demand response, and so on.
  • With increased deployment of feedback and communication, opportunities arise from reducing consumption, for better exploiting renewable sources, and for increasing the reliability and performance of the transmission and distribution networks. At the same time, however, closing loops where they have never been closed before, across multiple temporal and spatial scales, creates control challenges as well.
  1. We exist to be ambassadors of controls to the large energy and power systems communities  a. Feedback, optimization, estimation, dynamics, stability... these and other control system concepts are core to smart grid technology. In many ways, the smart grid is a control problem!

Systems and Synthetic Biology

Systems Biology involves the quantitative analysis of networks of dynamically interacting biological components, with the goal of reverse engineering these networks to understand how they robustly achieve biological function. Such networks are dynamic in nature and involve feedback at various levels of organization. Systems Identification and Adaptive Control

The System Identification and Control Technical Committee is responsible for promoting, coordinating and organising activities sponsored by the IEEE Control Systems Society in the areas of system identification and adaptive control. The system identification scope includes all aspects of system modelling and identification, from theoretical and methodological developments to practical applications. This includes, among others, the topics of model selection, identification methods, tracking and adaptation, model validation, fault detection, and experiment design. The adaptive control scope encompasses continuous and discontinuous adaptation and learning rules for prediction, control, and optimisation. This includes model-based and data-based adaptive control together with adaptation schemes for prediction, filtering and decision making.

Variable Structure and Sliding Mode Control

The Technical Committee on Variable Structure and Sliding Mode Control (TCVSSMC) is responsible for promoting, coordinating and organizing activities sponsored by the IEEE Control Systems Society in the areas of variable structure and sliding mode control. Variable structure systems are a class of systems whereby the control law is deliberately changed according to some defined rules which depend on the state or performance of the system. Sliding mode control is a particular type of variable structure system designed to drive and then constrain the system state to lie within a neighbourhood of the switching function. These methods permit the dynamic behaviour of the system to be tailored by the particular choice of switching function and exhibit inherent robustness properties. The methodology is inherently nonlinear and thus encompasses a range of mathematically challenging problems involving controller and observer design as well as issues of sampling and implementation. This is coupled with a large number of successful industrial application studies involving automatic flight control, control of electric motors, chemical processes, helicopter stability augmentation systems, space systems and robots. The domain of the TCVSSMC is thus very focussed.
