Message from The Executive Committee

CSS holds inclusivity, equity, and diversity as core values. Recent racial strife in the US, the outpouring of grief and justified anger in the US and beyond, remind us to remain steadfast in these core values more than ever. CSS strongly condemns systemic racism as well as any inequitable treatment of anyone, anywhere. We will continue to be guided by these core values and join hands with the science and engineering community at large and maintain our resolve to speak out and act against injustices and inequities of all kinds. CSS commits to conduct its operations always with this in mind.

CSS has recently established the CSS Fund within the IEEE Foundation specifically to assist in activities of outreach and inclusion. We would welcome suggestions and proposals as how best we might achieve this.

Biography

Yannis Paschalidis is a Distinguished Professor of Engineering at Boston University (BU) with appointments in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Computing & Data Sciences at Boston University. He is the Director of the Hariri Institute for Computing and Computational Science & Engineering -- BU's federation and convergence accelerator of all University centers and initiatives in this area of research. He obtained a Diploma (1991) from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, and an M.S. (1993) and a Ph.D. (1996) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), all in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He has been at Boston University since 1996. His current research interests lie in the fields of optimization, control, stochastic systems, robust learning, computational medicine, and computational biology. He has published a monograph and more than 250 refereed papers in these topics, and he has been the primary advisor to 29 Ph.D. theses.

Prof. Paschalidis' work has been recognized with a CAREER award (2000) from the U.S. National Science Foundation, the second prize in the 1997 George E. Nicholson

paper competition by INFORMS, the best student paper award at the 9th Intl. Symposium of Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks (WiOpt 2011) won by one of his Ph.D. students for a joint paper, an IBM/IEEE Smarter Planet Challenge Award, and a finalist best paper award at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA). His work on protein docking has been recognized for best performance in modeling selected protein-protein complexes against 64 other predictor groups (2009 Protein Interaction Evaluation Meeting). His recent work on health informatics won an IEEE Computer Society Crowd Sourcing Prize and a best paper award by the International Medical Informatics Associations (IMIA). He was an invited participant at the 2002 Frontiers of Engineering Symposium organized by the National Academy of Engineering, and at the 2014 National Academies Keck Futures Initiative (NAFKI) Conference. Prof. Paschalidis is a Fellow of both IEEE and IFAC and was the founding Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Control of Network Systems from 2013 until 2019. He is currently the Vice President of Publication Activities of the IEEE Control Systems Society.

Biography

Mathukumalli Vidyasagar is currently Cecil & Ida Green Chair in Systems Biology at the University of Texas at Dallas. His current research interests are in stochastic processes and their applications to computational biology with special emphasis on cancer biology, and to mathematical finance. He was born in Guntur, India on September 29, 1947. He received the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, in 1965, 1967 and 1969 respectively. Between 1969 and 1989, he was a Professor of Electrical Engineering at various universities in the USA and Canada. His last overseas job was with the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, Canada, where he served between 1980 and 1989. In 1989 he returned to India as the Director of the newly created Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIR) in Bangalore, under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. In 2000 he moved to the Indian private sector as an Executive Vice President of India's largest software company, Tata Consultancy Services, where he created the Advanced Technology Center, an industrial R&D laboratory of around 80 engineers. In 2009 he retired from TCS and joined the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering & Computer Science at the University of Texas at Dallas, as a Cecil & Ida Green Chair in Systems Biology. In March 2010 he was named as the Founding Head of the Bioengineering Department. He is a Fellow of several scientific societies including IEEE, and has received several awards in recognition of his research, including the IEEE Control Systems Award in 2008. Earlier he had received the Hendrik W. Bode Lecture Prize in 2000, and the Distinguished Service Citation from his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin.

President's Welcome Message

Welcome to the IEEE Control Systems Society

Control is everywhere: Aircraft and spacecraft, process plants and factories, homes and buildings, automobiles and trains, cellular telephones and networks, power grids and biological processes, drones and self-driving cars. These and other complex systems are illustrations of control theory and control technology. Dedicated to the governance, regulation, and realization of a desired performance in any complex system, methods, algorithms, and tools developed by control researchers have been widely used by generations of engineers and scientists to solve problems of practical importance. Wherever dynamics and feedback are involved, control becomes an essential tool.

Control is seen as the paragon of rigor and the foundation that formalizes the systems perspective by experts in other disciplines, and used as an essential building block for developing large-scale, safety-critical, and mission-critical systems.

The IEEE Control Systems Society is the leading global professional society for researchers and cutting-edge practitioners. Founded in 1954, the IEEE CSS has been at the forefront of control systems theory and technology for over 65 years. Its focus is to promote scientific, technological, and educational advancements in the fields of systems and control, theory and applications, all over the world.
