Biography

Ketan Savla is an assistant professor and John and Dorothy Shea Early Career Chair in Civil Engineering at the University of Southern California, with joint appointments in the Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the Daniel J. Epstein Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (courtesy), and the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering-Systems (courtesy). Prior to that, he was a research scientist in the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems at MIT. Ketan is 2017 recipient of American Automatic Control Council’s prestigious the Donald P. Eckman Award. The Eckman Award recognizes an outstanding young engineer in the field of automatic control. The recipient must be younger than 35 years on January 1 of the year of award. In addition, he has been recognized with NSF CAREER and an IEEE CSS George S. Axelby Outstanding Paper Award. He obtained his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and M.A. in Applied Mathematics from the University of California at Santa Barbara, M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and B. Tech. in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. His current research interest is in distributed robust and optimal control, dynamical networks, state-dependent queuing systems, and incentive design, with applications in civil infrastructure and autonomous systems. He currently serves as an Associate Editor for the Conference Editorial Board of the IEEE Control Systems Society, the IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems, and the IEEE Control Systems Letters.

Biography

I received an undergraduate degree in Applied Mathematics and PhD degree in Physics and Mathematics from the State University of Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, in 1982 and 1990, respectively.

From 1982 to 1995, I held research positions with the Radiophysical Research Institute, Nizhny Novgorod. From 1995 to 1996, I was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Haifa, Israel. In 1996 I joined the University of New South Wales in Canberra, Australia, where I am currently full Professor in the School of Engineering and Information Technology. I held visiting appointments at the Australian National University (2005 and 2012), Stuttgart University (2013) and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2014).

I am an Associate Editor for Automatica, SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization and IEEE Control Systems Letters (L-CSS). In 2012-2018 I served as an Associate Editor for IET Control Theory and Applications. My current research interests include decentralized and distributed control and estimation, stability and filtering of quantum control systems, stochastic control and filtering theory, robust control theory.

My colleagues at the UNSW know me as Valeri Ougrinovski, although the Mathematical Reviews, ISI Web of Science and Scopus transliterated my Russian name as Valery Ugrinovskii. When I moved to Australia, I kept using the latter spelling in all subsequent journal and conference papers.

My research interests are in the field of Mathematical Control Systems Theory, specifically in the following areas:

Large-scale interconnected systems, decentralized and distributed control
Stability and stabilization of quantum systems
Robust Stability and Robust Control, Robust Estimation and Filtering
Stochastic Systems, Stochastic Stability and Control
In the past, I have been working in the areas of infinite-dimensional systems and signal processing.

Biography

I received the Laurea Triennale (B.Sc Degree) and the Laurea Specialistica (M.Sc Degree) in Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Padova, Italy, in 2005 and 2007, respectively. I received a Ph.D. in Information Engineering from the Department of Information Engineering, University of Padova, Italy, in 2011. My advisors were Prof. Silvano Pupolin (University of Padova) and Prof. Georgios B. Giannakis (University of Minnesota). From January 2009 to September 2010, I was a visiting scholar at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Minnesota, USA, within the group of Prof. Georgios B. Giannakis. From January 2011 to November 2014 I was a Postdoctoral Associate at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Digital Technology Center of the University of Minnesota, USA.

I am an Assistant Professor within the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Energy Engineering (ECEE) at the University of Colorado Boulder. I am also a member of the Affiliate Faculty Program of the Department of Applied Mathematics (APPM) at the University of Colorado Boulder.

I hold a courtesy position as a Visiting Professor at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). Prior to joining the University of Colorado Boulder, from December 2014 to August 2018, I was a Senior Scientist at NREL. My research efforts were on developing optimization and control algorithms, with particular emphasis on distributed architectures for power and energy systems. I was the Principal Investigator of a project funded by the DOE Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-e) under the program Network Optimized Distributed Energy Systems (NODES).
