Biography

Mariagrazia Dotoli is a Full Professor in Systems and Control Engineering at Politecnico di Bari, Department of Electrical and Information Engineering, which she joined in 1999 as a tenured Assistant Professor. She was the 2011-2013 Vice-Rector for Research of Politecnico di Bari (Italy) and a 2012-2015 member-elect of the Academic Senate of the same University. She is currently Vice Director for Research of the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering at Politecnico di Bari. She received the Laurea degree in Electronic Engineering with honors in 1995 and the Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 1999, both from Politecnico di Bari.

She has been a visiting scholar at the Paris 6 University (France) and at the Technical University of Denmark. Since 2003 she is an expert evaluator of the European Commission, previously for the Sixth and Seventh RTD Framework Programmes, and subsequently for Horizon 2020. Her research interests include the modeling, identification, management, control, automation, optimization, and diagnosis of: discrete event industrial systems, Petri nets, manufacturing systems, supply chains, logistics and transportation systems, traffic networks, energy systems.

She is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering, the IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, and the IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics: Systems. She was an Associate Editor of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters until 2018.

She is currently General Chair of the MED2021 29th Mediterranean Conference on Control and Automation, Program Chair of the CODIT2020 International Conference on Control, Decision and Information Technologies, Program Chair of the CASE2020 annual IEEE Conference on Automation Science and Engineering and Publicity Co-Chair of the IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics.

She was the Workshop and Tutorial chair of the 2015 IEEE Conference on Automation Science and Engineering, the Special Session co-chair of the 2013 IEEE Conference on Emerging Technology and Factory Automation, and chair of the National Committee of the 2009 IFAC Workshop on Dependable Control of Discrete Systems. She has been member of the International Program Committee of 70+ international Conferences and Symposia. She is a member of the following committees: IFAC Technical Committee on Discrete Event and Hybrid Systems (since 2011); IEEE Systems Man and Cybernetics Society Technical Committee on Discrete Event Systems (since 2007); IEEE Control Systems Society Technical Committee on Discrete Event Systems (since 2005).

Laura Giarré received the Laurea degree in electronic engineering from the Universitá di Firenze, Italy, and the Ph.D. degree in system engineering from the Universitá di Bologna, Italy, in 1986 and 1992, respectively. Her research interests include networked systems, according to a game theoretical approach with applications to WiFi networks, sensor networks, inventory networks, and smart grid. She worked also on identification of LPV, nonlinear and networked systems, and e-health solutions for interoperability. In 2013, she received the national qualification (ASN) for full professor. She served as an Associate Editor of Systems and Control Letters from 1999 to 2011 and the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control from 2012 to 2015. In 2010, she was the Vice Chair of SING6 and the General Chair of the IEEE MED in 2014. Biography

Maurice Heemels received the M.Sc. degree in mathematics and the Ph.D. degree in control theory (both summa cum laude) from the University of Technology, Eindhoven (TU/e), the Netherlands, in 1995 and 1999, respectively. From 2000 to 2004, he was with the Electrical Engineering Department, TU/e, and from 2004 to 2006 with the Embedded Systems Institute (ESI). Since 2006, he has been with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, TU/e, where he is currently a Full Professor. He held visiting professor positions at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Switzerland (2001), and at the University of California at Santa Barbara (2008). In 2004, he worked also at the company Oce, the Netherlands. His current research interests include hybrid and cyber-physical systems, networked and event-triggered control systems and constrained systems including model predictive control. Maurice served/s on the editorial boards of Automatica, Nonlinear Analysis: Hybrid Systems, Annual Reviews in Control, and IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control. He was a recipient of a personal VICI grant awarded by STW (Dutch Technology Foundation, NWO/TTW) and is the current chair of the IFAC Technical Committee on Networked Systems. He is the founding father of a bi-annual PhD school on multi-disciplinary research topics such as hybrid, networked and cyber-physical systems educating over 600 PhD students worldwide since 2003. He was IPC (co-)chair of IFAC ADHS'12, ECC'13, IFAC NECSYS'13, and IFAC ADHS'18. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.

Biography

Reza Moheimani joined the University of Texas at Dallas in 2015, where he established and directs the Laboratory for Dynamics and Control of Nanosystems in the Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science. He currently holds the James Von Ehr Distinguished Chair in Science and Technology and is a Professor in the Department of Systems Engineering, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Prior to joining the UTD, he was a Professor and Australian Research Council Future Fellow in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Newcastle, Australia. During his 17 years with the University of Newcastle, he established a research program in the area of high-precision mechatronic systems with significant national and international collaborations and served as Associate Director of Centre for Complex Dynamic Systems and Control (CDSC), an Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence.

His research has ranged across many areas including robust control theory and robust state estimation of uncertain dynamic systems, applications of control and estimation in smart structures, active control of noise and vibration, and control of high-precision mechatronic systems. His current research interests include ultrahigh-precision mechatronic systems, with a particular emphasis on dynamics and control at the nanometer scale, including applications of control and estimation in nanopositioning systems for high-speed scanning probe microscopy and nanomanufacturing, modeling and control of microcantilever-based devices, control of microactuators in microelectromechanical systems, and design, modeling, and control of micromachined nanopositioners for on-chip scanning probe microscopy. Dr. Moheimani has published over 300 reviewed articles and 5 books and edited volumes.

Biography

Prof. Radhakant Padhi earned his Masters in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1996, followed by his Ph.D. from Missouri University of Science and Technology (MST) – Rolla, USA, in 2001. After two years of postdoctoral studies, he joined the Dept. of Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore as a faculty member in December 2003, where currently he a full professor. He has briefly served the Defence Research and Development Organisation of India as a scientist during 1996-1997.

Prof. Padhi’s research interests are in the broad area of systems theory and applications, with emphasis on synthesis algorithms in optimal control, nonlinear control, intelligent control and state estimation. He works on diverse application areas such as guidance and control of aerospace vehicles, target tracking for guidance, integrated guidance control and estimation, automatic drug delivery for biomedical systems, control of distributed parameter systems and industrial process control. He has more than 240 publications in international journals and conferences, three of which have been cited more than 100 times. Two of his books (one on Satellite Formation Flying and one on Applied Optimal Control and State Estimation) are going to be published soon by Springer and Wiley respectively. The nonlinear and optimal guidance and control algorithms developed by him are of wide applicability across various disciplines and have been accepted well across the globe.

Prof. Padhi is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineers (INAE), a Fellow of the Institution of Electronics and Communication Engineers (IETE), a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers (India), an Associate Fellow of American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), a Senior Member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a member of the Council of International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC). He is a Technical Committee member of Aerospace Control in both IEEE and IFAC. He is a life member of the Aeronautical Society of India, Systems Society of India and Soft Computing Research Society of India. He is a steering committee member of the Asian Control Association as well, representing India. He has received several awards for his valuable research contributions as well, the most recent being the Excellence in Aerospace Education award from the Aeronautical Society of India. He is currently an associate editor of three journals, namely IFAC Mechatronics, Unmanned Systems, and Intl. J. of Aeronautical & Space Sciences. He has executed over 25 industry-sponsored research projects and delivered several keynote and plenary talks in various conferences.

Biography

Maria Prandini was born in Brescia, Italy, on September 8, 1969. She received the Laurea degree cum laude in Electrical Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano (1994), and the Ph.D. degree in Information Technology from the Universita degli Studi di Brescia (1998). After her Ph.D. studies, she was a visiting postdoctoral researcher at the Electronics Research Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley, from 1998 to 2000. She also held visiting positions at Delft University of Technology (1998), Cambridge University (2000), University of California, Berkeley (2005), and Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich (2006).

From December 2002 to January 2011, she was Assistant Professor at the Dipartimento di Elettronica e Informazione of the Politecnico di Milano. From February 2011 to February 2018, she was Associate Professor at the same department, which is now named Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria, where she is currently Full Professor.

Her research interests include randomized methods for system analysis and design; modeling, verification and control of stochastic and hybrid systems; and multi-agent systems, involving distributed optimization and game theoretic solutions for cooperative and noncooperative decision making. Her research studies were motivated mainly by applications to the transportation and energy domains.

Since 1999, she has been teaching courses in control at the undergraduate and graduate levels, in Italy as well as at international institutions abroad. In particular, she was a lecturer of a Ph.D. course on Stochastic Systems: Estimation and Control at the University of California, Berkeley (spring 1999), a master course on Hybrid systems at the University of Stuttgart (first semester 2014-15), and a Ph.D course on Hybrid systems at Lund University (October 2015). She is a lecturer of a master course on Nonlinear control at her institution, where she has also been teaching advanced courses for Ph.D. students on Hybrid Systems and Cooperative and Noncooperative Optimization and Control.

She is currently Chair of the Automation and Control Engineering Program at Politecnico di Milano.

She was the principal investigator in the EC-funded H2020 project UnCoVerCPS \Unifying Control and Verification of Cyber-Physical Systems" (2015{2018), being responsible for the scientific activities of the PoliMi team, which include the development of distributed optimization techniques for networked systems. Previously, she contributed to EC-funded projects on modeling, verification and control of stochastic and hybrid systems with application to the energy and transportation domains. More specifically, she was workpackage leader in the FP5 project HYBRIDGE \Distributed control and stochastic analysis of hybrid systems, supporting safety-critical real-time systems design" (2002{2005), and principal investigator in the FP6 project iFly \Safety, Complexity and Responsibility based design and validation of highly automated Air Trac Management" (2007{2011) and in the FP7 project MoVeS \Modelling, verification and control of complex systems: From foundations to power network applications" (2010-2013).

She has been a member of the editorial boards of leading journals in control as an associate editor (IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, 2009-2013, IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, 2009-2015, and Nonlinear Analysis: Hybrid Systems, 2011-2015) and as a discussion editor (European Journal of Control, 2007-2013). She is a member of the IEEE Control Systems Society (CSS) Conference Editorial Board (since 2007) and of the European Control Association (EUCA) Conference Editorial Board (since 2013) as an associate editor. She is currently associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Control of Network Systems. She has been active in the IEEE CSS and the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC). She is a member of the IFAC Technical Committee on Discrete Event and Hybrid Systems (since 2008). She has been appointed member of the IFAC Policy Committee for the term 2017-2020. She has been contributing to the activities and governance of the IEEE CSS in different roles. From 2013 to 2015, she was editor for the CSS Electronic Publications. She was elected member of the IEEE CSS Board of Governors for a three-year term (2015-2017). She was IEEE CSS Vice-President for Conference Activities in 2016 and 2017. She has been an elected member of the CSS nominating committee for the year 2018.

She is currently a member of SIGBED Board of Directors.

She has been a member of the program committees of several international conferences and either organizing or contributing to invited sessions, workshops, and tutorials. She was co-chair of the 21st ACM International Conference on Hybrid Systems: Computation and Control (HSCC 2018).

Currently, she is co-program chair of IEEE Conference on Decisione and Control 2020 and program chair of IEEE Conference on Decisione and Control 2021.

In 2018, she received the IEEE CSS Distinguished Member Award for contributions to stochastic, hybrid, and distributed control systems and outstanding service to the Control Systems Society related to electronic publications and conference activities.

In 2019 she was elevated to IEEE Fellow, effective 1 January 2020, with the following citation: “for contributions to stochastic, hybrid and distributed control systems theory.”

Biography

Fabrizio Dabbene received the Laurea degree in Electrical Engineering in 1995 and the Ph.D. degree in Systems and Computer Engineering in 1999, both from Politecnico di Torino, Italy. He is currently holding a Senior Researcher position at the institute CNR IEIIT of the National Research Council of Italy, where he is the coordinator of the Systems Modeling & Control (SMC) Group. He has held visiting and research positions at The University of Iowa, at Penn State University and at the RAS (Russian Academy of Sciences) Institute of Control Science, Moscow.

His research interests include probabilistic and randomized methods for systems and control, robust control and identification of complex systems, convex optimization, dynamical social networks, space robotics, and precision agriculture. On these topics, he has published more than 150 research papers, which include more than forty articles published in international journals. He is co-author of the book Randomized Algorithms for Analysis and Control of Uncertain Systems, Springer-Verlag, published in two editions, and editor of the book Probabilistic and Randomized Methods for Design under Uncertainty, also published by Springer. He has been co-organizer of several invited sessions and special courses, and of three Conference Workshops at CDC-00, MSC-08 and MSC-10. He is a recipient of the Outstanding Paper Award from EurAgeng in 2010. He served as Associate Editor for Automatica and as Chair of the IFAC Technical Committee on Robust Control.

Dr. Dabbene is a Senior Member of the IEEE, and he has taken various responsibilities within the IEEE Control Systems Society. He has been an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control (2008-2012), Program Chair for the 2010 IEEE Multiconference on Systems and Control, Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on CACSD (2010-2013), member of CEB (2002-2008), IPC member of various IEEE conferences, and member of several CDC Best Student Paper Award Committees. Andrea Serrani (M’94) received the Laurea (B.Eng.) (summa cum laude) degree in electrical engineering from the University of Ancona, Ancona, Italy, in 1993, the M.S. degree in systems science and mathematics from Washington University in St. Louis, St. Louis, MO, USA, in 1996, the Ph.D. degree in artificial intelligence systems from the University of Ancona in 1997, and the D.Sc. degree in systems science and mathematics from Washington University in St. Louis in 2000.

From 1994 to 1999, he was a Fulbright Fellow with Washington University in St. Louis. From 2004 to 2007, he served as the Technical Leader of the Reusable Launch Vehicle area of the AFOSR/AFRL Collaborative Center for Control Sciences, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, USA. He held visiting positions at the University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy, and the University of Padova, Padua, Italy, and multiple summer faculty positions at the Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, OH, including four AF-SFFP Fellowships. Since 2002, he has been with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, The Ohio State University, Columbus OH, where he is currently a Professor and the Chair of Graduate Studies. He has authored or co-authored over 150 articles in journals, proceedings of international conferences and book chapters, and has co-authored the book Robust Autonomous Guidance: An Internal Model Approach (Springer-Verlag). His research interests are at the intersection of methodological aspects of nonlinear, adaptive and geometric control theory with advanced applications in aerospace and marine systems, fluidic systems, robotics, and automotive engineering.

Dr. Serrani is a member of International Federation of Automatic Control and American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He received the Certificate of Outstanding Service as an Associate Editor (AE) of Automatica, was selected three times as an Outstanding Reviewer of the IEEE Transaction on Automatic Control, and three times as an Excellent Reviewer of the AIAA Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics. He served, among other positions, as the Publications Chair of the 53rd and 52nd IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, and the 2009 American Control Conference. He has served as an Editor-at-Large of the 53rd and 51st IEEE CDC, and the 2017 ACC. He has been a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Control System Society (CSS) and has delivered semi-plenary lectures at the 8th IFAC Symposium on Nonlinear Control Systems and the 2011 Chinese Control and Decision Conference. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology and also serves in the IEEE CSS and IFAC Editorial Boards. He is a past AE of the IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, Automatica, and the International Journal of Robust and Nonlinear Control. He will serve as the Program Chair of the 2019 ACC, and is currently serving as General co-Chair for the 2022 IEEE CDC.

Karl H. Johansson is Professor at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden. He received MSc and PhD degrees from Lund University. He has held visiting positions at UC Berkeley, California Institute of Technology, Nanyang Technological University, Institute of Advanced Studies Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and Zhejiang University. His research interests are in networked control systems, cyber-physical systems, and applications in transportation, energy, and automation systems. He is a member of the Swedish Research Council's Scientific Council for Natural Sciences and Engineering Sciences. He has served on the IEEE Control Systems Society Board of Governors, the IFAC Executive Board, and he is currently Vice-President of the European Control Association Council. He has been on the Editorial Boards of Automatica, IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, IEEE Transactions on Control of Network Systems, and IET Control Theory and Applications, and currently serves on the Editorial Boards of ACM Transactions on Internet of Things, Annual Review of Control, Robotics, and Autonomous Systems and European Journal of Control. He has received several best paper awards and other distinctions from IEEE, IFAC, and ACM. In 2017 he was awarded Distinguished Professor of the Swedish Research Council and in 2009 he was awarded Wallenberg Scholar, as one of the first ten scholars from all sciences, by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. He was awarded Future Research Leader from the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research in 2005. He received the triennial Young Author Prize from IFAC in 1996 and the Peccei Award from the International Institute of System Analysis, Austria, in 1993. He was granted Young Researcher Awards from Scania in 1996 and from Ericsson in 1998 and 1999. He is an IEEE Fellow and Fellow of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences and is a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Control Systems Society.
