Alessandro Giua

Biography

Alessandro Giua (M’92–SM’08–F’17) received the Ph.D. degree in computer and systems engineering from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, USA, in 1992.

He is currently a Professor of Automatic Control with the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Cagliari, Cagliari, Italy. He has also held faculty or visiting positions in several institutions worldwide, including Aix-Marseille University, France, and Xidian University, Xi’an, China. His research interests include discrete-event systems, hybrid systems, networked control systems, Petri nets, and failure diagnosis.

Dr. Giua is a recipient of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) Outstanding Service Award. He is an Editor-in-Chief of the Nonlinear Analysis: Hybrid Systems, a Senior Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, and a Department Editor for the Discrete Event Dynamic Systems. He is a member of the IFAC Publications Committee. He was a Chair of the IFAC Technical Committee 1.3 on Discrete Event and Hybrid Systems (2008–2014). Within the IEEE Control Systems Society, he served as the General Chair of the 55th Conference on Decision of Control (2016), a member of the Board of Governors (2013–2015), and a Chapter Activities Chair of the Member Activities Board (2006–2013).
