A Note from the Executive Committee of the IEEE CSS

January, 2010

Dear fellow CSS members:

This is another in an occasional series of mailings from the Society's Executive Committee.  We hope to keep you informed of CSS happenings of interest and we welcome your feedback; contact information can be found at the end of this note.

CSS Online Lecture Library

We are pleased to announce that a lecture library is now available that features recent plenary lectures from CSS sponsored conferences.  More content is in the process of being integrated.  The library is accessible at www.ieeecss-oll.org.  Enjoy!

IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control now on CD-ROM also!

At the CSS Board of Governors meeting in Shanghai in December, a new initiative has been approved.  In 2010, all member subscribers of the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control will receive the content of the journal on CD-ROM in addition to the paper copy.  The CD-ROMs will be distributed with every other issue.  The first five discs will contain the contents of the current and previous month's issues.  The year-end disc will contain the full year's content.  The CD-ROM distribution will give members permanent electronic versions of the journal (members have access to CSS journals through IEEE Xplore, but this access is only for the duration of their membership and therefore it is temporary).

Controls curriculum survey report available

Under the leadership of Jeff Cook of the University of Michigan, the CSS Task Force on Outreach undertook an informal survey with the objective of evaluating capabilities and perceived shortcomings of entry level control engineers in industrial positions. The results of this survey are now available in the form of a report, which can be accessed on the CSS Website at http://ieeecss.org/publications/miscellaneous.html

CSS Outreach Fund

At the CSS Board of Governors meeting in Shanghai in December, a new member benefit was approved.  Beginning in 2011, funding will be available for projects that will benefit CSS and/or the controls community in general.  Details are still being defined and will be made available on the CSS Website.  Stay tuned!

Reminder:  New paper upload policy for CSS conferences

We would like to remind all members that in June 2009, the CSS Board of Governors approved a new policy for uploading accepted papers in CSS conferences. This policy will be effective starting with our 2010 conferences, MSC 2010 and CDC 2010.  Authors with full registration will be able to upload up to three papers.  Reduced-rate registrants (e.g., students) will be entitled to upload one paper.  Additional uploads in either case will incur an additional charge.

Reminder:  CSS LinkedIn group

The IEEE Control Systems Society┬Ł LinkedIn group, which was established in 2009, now has over 550 members.  To join, go to the group page at http://www.linkedin.com/e/gis/1514847.  The preapprovals are based on e-mail addresses in the IEEE CSS membership database as of January 2009.  If your registered LinkedIn address is a different one, it's no problem. We'll manually approve your membership.  If you are not a LinkedIn member you can follow instructions to create an account if you'd like to join the group.  LinkedIn groups allow discussions, postings of job announcements and positions sought, and communication of other items of group interest.
