Biography

David Castañón received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Tulane University, New Orleans, LA, USA, in 1971, and the Ph.D. degree in applied mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, USA, in 1976. He was a Chief Scientist with Alphatech, Inc., Burlington, MA, USA, until 1990 when he joined Boston University. He was the Chair of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department with Boston University, and the Co-Director of the Center for Information and Systems Engineering with Boston University. He served as the Deputy Director of the National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center on Subsurface Sensing and Imaging Systems and is the Associate Director of the Department of Homeland Security ALERT Center of Excellence in Explosives Detection. He is currently a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering with Boston University, Boston, MA, USA. His research interests include stochastic control, estimation, optimization, and image understanding. He has served in various positions for the IEEE Control Systems Society, including President. He also served on various IEEE committees, including Chair of the IEEE Society Review Committee. He was a member of the Air Forces Scientific Advisory Board from 2006 to 2010. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Member Award of the IEEE Control Systems Society (2006).
